The international conference attracts the entire international professional myotonic dystrophy community and combines basic research, clinical research, pharmaceutical development as well as patient and medical care focus.<\/p>\n<p>With over 400 predominantly professional attendees, IDMC presentations were broadly structured into historic overviews and perspectives, pathogenic mechanisms, patient engagement, biomarkers and outcome measures, clinical manifestations and quality of life, cell and animal models, clinical trials and clinical trial designs, therapeutic strategies and drug development, children with DM, and clinical management and rehabilitation. Early career scientists and clinicians presented along with respective opinion and thought leader regarding research progress and study outcomes. Multiple poster sessions complemented the program.<\/p>\n<p>While the program and the presentations were carefully selected, organized, and truly outstanding, for MDF, it was particularly exciting that almost all of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/myotonic-dystrophy-research-fellows\">Research Fellows<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/myotonic-dystrophy-foundation-research-grants-funding-resources\">Early Career Grantees<\/a>\u00a0were able to attend and present their important work. MDF grantee highlights included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-grant-feature-melissa-hale-phd\">Melissa Hale<\/a>\u00a0shared updates from her latest projects and enthusiastically offered invaluable career insights to aspiring investigators.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-cameron-niazi\">Cameron Niazi<\/a>\u00a0sparked an exciting debate with David Brook on mechanisms of RNA foci formation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-preeti-kumari-phd\">Preeti Kumari<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-lily-cisco\">Lily Cisco<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-profile-dr-benjamin-gallais\">Benjamin Gallais<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-jiss-louis-phd\">Jiss Louis<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/meet-early-career-grant-recipient-dr-johanna-hamel\">Johanna Hamel<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-emma-shea\">Emma Shea<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-grant-feature-matteo-garibaldi-md-phd\">Matteo Garibaldi<\/a>\u00a0shared important insights on their groundbreaking research.<\/li>\n<li>MDF&#8217;s Fellows and Early Career Scholars also showcased their research through the poster sessions, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/research-fellow-feature-jesus-frias\">Jesus Frias<\/a>\u00a0with a dynamic Flash Poster talk.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/2024-mdf-research-fellows\">Sakura Hamazaki<\/a>, earned the prestigious &#8222;Best Poster in Basic Science&#8220; award for her outstanding presentation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"col-md-12 pull-left clear-right\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/myotonic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Unknown-2.jpg\" width=\"3870\" height=\"1433\" data-entity-uuid=\"7fad5a04-ccdb-4e2b-8073-7e7303722db3\" data-entity-type=\"file\" \/><\/div>\n<p>During a pre-meeting organized and hosted by the European Myotonic Dystrophy Association (Euro-DyMA), pharmaceutical programs presented updates of their drug development programs and progress towards clinical trials. The recorded presentations are thereafter shared with the patient community in Europe. This is similar to MDF\u2019s &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/digital-academy\/industry-updates-day-1-2023-mdf-annual-conference\">Industry Updates<\/a>&#8220; held at MDF conferences so\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/euro-dyma.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Euro-DyMA<\/a>\u00a0and MDF will collaborate to host these sessions together at the 2025 MDF Annual Conference May 2-3rd.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col-xs-12 col-sm-6 col-md-6 col-lg-3 pull-right\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/myotonic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IDMC-14.png\" width=\"3024\" height=\"3024\" data-entity-uuid=\"b70fa015-eb86-4066-a89b-fed3b98ca9e1\" data-entity-type=\"file\" \/><\/div>\n<p>The conference concluded with a family day for local (Dutch) families after an award ceremony for best research posters and best presentations for young professionals, as well as the presentation of the Steinert Awards for lifetime achievements and contributions to DM clinical and professional advancements.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/welcome-dr-andy-rohrwasser-mdf-s-chief-scientific-officer\">Dr. Andy Rohrwasser<\/a>, MDF&#8217;s Chief Science Officer, had the honor of presenting the esteemed Steinert Clinical Sciences Awards to two distinguished members of MDF&#8217;s Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC):\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/cynthia-gagnon-phd\">Dr. Cynthia Gagnon<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myotonic.org\/darren-monckton-phd\">Dr. Darren Monckton<\/a>!
