Juvenile-onset myotonic dystrophy
Juvenile-onset myotonic dystrophy refers to individuals living with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) whose symptoms began during childhood or adolescence, typically before the age of 21. Adults living with DM1 whose symptoms began during childhood or adolescence are often referred to as juvenile-onset Adults or “JOAs”.
About juvenile-onset myotonic dystrophy
Juvenile-onset Myotonic Dystrophy often begins during childhood or adolescence, when academic, social, and physical demands are increasing. Because symptoms begin during key developmental years, JOAs may experience learning differences, attention or behavioral challenges, and changes in muscle function over time. Physical symptoms can be subtle at first and may become more noticeable, affecting school experiences, social development, and major life transitions.
With appropriate medical care, educational supports, and strong community connections, many JOAs are able to build meaningful routines, independence, and relationships over time.
- Often appear during childhood or adolescence
- Early signs may include subtle muscle changes, fatigue, or sleepiness
- Learning or attention differences can emerge alongside physical symptoms
- May affect school performance and require educational supports
- Can influence social interactions and behavior
- Physical stamina and muscle function may change over time
- Ongoing medical care and community support help build independence and routines
