Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2)

Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2) is an inherited neuromuscular disorder that primarily affects muscle strength, function, and control. It is caused by a genetic mutation in the CNBP gene that leads to progressive muscle weakness, stiffness, and pain.

About myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2)

Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2) most commonly impacts the proximal muscles of the hips, thighs, and upper arms, but it can also affect other systems, including the heart, eyes, endocrine function, and metabolism. Symptoms and severity vary widely from person to person, and they usually appear in adulthood. As a multisystem condition, DM2 often requires coordinated care and long-term management to support mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.

Body systems affected

DM2 affects multiple body systems, some of which are listed below. Learn more on how myotonic dystrophy affects the body.

Muscles: Myotonia (difficulty relaxing muscles), proximal muscle weakness (hips, thighs, upper arms)

Respiratory system: Breathing, lung function, and sleep-related respiratory challenges.

Cardiovascular system: Heart rhythm and conduction issues.

Gastrointestinal system: Difficulty swallowing, acid reflux, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating difficulties.

Endocrine system: Insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, and hormone issues.
