2026 Fellow Feature: Hossameldin Ali, PhD, MSc

Published: April 16, 2026

Meet one of our 2026 Fellows, Hossameldin Ali, PhD, MSc! He is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Glasgow.

Dr. Ali is a computational biologist with expertise in evolutionary modeling, software development, and repeat expansion disorders. He earned an MSc in Bioinformatics at the University of Glasgow with Dr. Monckton, where he developed the Repeat Genotyping Tool (RGT), and completed a PhD at the Center for Genomic Regulation focused on inferring natural selection in the human lineage.

Dr. Ali is now a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Kelleher’s group, contributing to msprime and tskit. With strong skills in computational genetics and population-level inference, he aims to apply data-driven approaches to advance myotonic dystrophy research. His project “Enabling Population Screening: Determining DM1 Germline Repeat Expansion Rates” will investigate how and when CTG repeats expand using large-scale sequencing, sperm analysis, and family mutation data to assess population-level transmission risk.
