This session explores the many symptoms of DM as well symptom management strategies/techniques. We discuss alleviation of symptoms including fatigue and daytime sleepiness, treatments for systemic issues, quality of life, prevention, medications, and more. Dr. Gutmann is introduced by Northern California Support Group Facilitator Dr. Leslie Krongold.

About the presenters:
Laurie Gutmann, MD
Dr. Gutmann is Professor and Chair of Neurology at Indiana University beginning Oct 1 2020 and is a neuromuscular specialist with clinical and research focus in myotonic dystrophy. She will co-direct the Indiana University Neuroscience Institute. She previously developed the myotonic dystrophy multidisciplinary clinic at the University of Iowa, where she was Vice Chair of Clinical Research. She is co-chair of the NINDS Neuromuscular Disorders Common Data Elements committee and co-leads the NINDS Clinical Trials Methodology Course. She serves on several national committees focused on education and training of medical specialists as well as previously serving as MDA clinic director and chair of the Neurology Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. She graduated from Oberlin College, received her MD from West Virginia University, and did residency and fellowship training at the University of Virginia. She has been caring for patients with neuromuscular disorders for over 30 years.
