Laila Allen is a dedicated public health professional and community advocate with a strong commitment to service and disability education. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in public health, Laila is currently enrolled in the University of Washington’s Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program, where she is learning more about developmental delays and disabilities to better support her community.

Laila’s personal connection to myotonic dystrophy (DM) began in 2021 following the birth of her daughter, Betsy. After Betsy was diagnosed with congenital myotonic dystrophy (CDM), Laila received confirmation of her own DM diagnosis. These connected experiences have fueled her passion for patient advocacy and community health, and inspired her commitment to creating positive change.

Outside of her professional and academic pursuits, Laila is an avid reader and enthusiastic traveler who values lifelong learning. As an Awareness Ambassador, Laila is eager to share her story to raise awareness and provide education about DM. She believes strongly in the power of community and hopes that by sharing openly, she can help other families feel supported as they navigate a new diagnosis.
